We introduce pieces that shatter our lens of what we know and love. To shatter what we know of Canada, we bring you a reprise of a portion of “Voice of a Nation,” our 2017 commission of composer Ian Cusson of Métis and French Canadian descent. His piece “Five Songs on Poems of Marilyn Dumont” is brought to life by Canadian/Indigenous (Métis) Mezzo-Soprano Rebecca Cuddy. We then shatter the image of a classical composer (picture Beethoven and Mozart’s portraits) by bringing you “Quest” by Asian-Canadian female composer Alice Ping Yee Ho. Lastly, we take this opportunity bring ourselves back to our own “shatter” moment of losing our Maestro Kerry Stratton to ALS. Composer-in-Residence Samuel Bisson’s “Currency of Time” was written in response to Kerry’s illness, and an exploration of time as precious, as a currency.
